1:1 Bereavement Volunteers

Volunteer to directly support our children and their families.

The support given by our 1:1 Bereavement Volunteers is invaluable and helps us to support as many families as possible. We recruit for this role in spring and autumn each year. Check the opportunities page for the latest volunteer vacancies.

Our current 1:1 Bereavement Volunteer team:

Amanda Robb 1:1 Bereavement Volunteer (Newark)

Amanda is a Level 5 Counselling student at Ridgeway College. She has completed her Communication Through Play training and volunteered at the annual bereavement residential.

Andy Poxon 1:1 Bereavement Volunteer (Newark)

Andy is a BSc Humanistic and Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy student at the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (SPTI). He also volunteers at our Peer Support Group.

Debbie Clarke 1:1 Volunteer Support Worker (Bassetlaw)

Debbie has over 30 years’ experience in primary education, including experience supporting children with neurodiversity. She works part time as a mentor for trainee teachers.

Emma Hughes 1:1 Bereavement Volunteer (Bassetlaw)

Emma is a Level 4 Therapeutic Counselling student at ATTFE. She brings a wealth of experience from the housing sector and prison service. She also has voluntary experience with vulnerable women.

Jackie Slaney 1:1 Volunteer Support Worker (Mansfield)

Jackie has 15 years’ experience in primary education. She is also a Counsellor for NSPCC Childline and a school reading volunteer.

Julie Turner 1:1 Bereavement Volunteer (Mansfield)

Julie is a Level 4 Counselling student at Counselling Training the Midlands (CTTM). She is an experienced Special Educational Needs Teaching Assistant, has a Level 2 British Sign Language and specialises in neurodiversity and ADHD.

Martin Biddle 1:1 Volunteer Counsellor (Nottingham and online)

Martin is a qualified Counsellor with a MSc Integrative Psychotherapy from the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (SPTI). He is also a Counsellor at a local university.

Nick Bealing 1:1 Bereavement Volunteer (Newark)

Nick is a BSc Humanistic and Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy student at the Sherwood Psychotherapy Training Institute (SPTI). He also runs a project that provides cinema trips for children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).

Pauline Doughty 1:1 Volunteer Support Worker (Sutton in Ashfield)

Pauline is a qualified Youth Worker with many years of experience. She has also volunteered at multiple CBC bereavement residentials.

Rosie Baker 1:1 Volunteer Counsellor (Newark)

Rosie is a qualified Art Therapist with MA Art Psychotherapy from Leeds Beckett University. She has experience as a Teaching Assistant and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Teacher. She has also has experience as a volunteer in hospital and SEND school settings.

Samantha Martin 1:1 Bereavement Volunteer (Mansfield)

Samantha is a Level 4 Counselling student at ATTFE. She has a BSc Social Psychology from Open University and has voluntary experience in schools.

Volunteer Administrators

The Volunteer Administrators can be the first person to welcome you to the Centre or may support with vital fundraising tasks. They are critical to bolstering our capacity to help as many families as possible.
Patron & Ambassadors

As a charity we are really lucky to have the support of our Patron and Ambassadors, they are all passionate about making a difference to local children.
Community volunteer

The ideal way to help us if you would like to get involved on an ad-hoc basis and great fun as you can get involved in events and meet lots of new people.

We have a number of trustees who donate their time and skills to help set the strategic direction of the charity.

Make A Referral

We accept referrals from professionals and families for children aged between 3-18 years and their parents/carers affected by the death or terminal illness of someone important to them
How to Explain Funerals & Cremations to a Child

It is important to use clear and simple language when describing funerals, burials or cremation. Here is our advice for explaining these to children
Play Therapy

Play Therapy helps young children experiencing trauma due to their bereavement communicate their feelings and work through their grief using the natural form of play
Free Specialist Bereavement Support for Children & Families

The Children's Bereavement Centre is a registered charity that provides free specialist support for children and young people aged 3 -18 years as well as their parents or carers who are affected by the death or terminal-illness of someone important to them.
Training for Professionals

We offer a number of training sessions for professionals, who want to build on their knowledge and skills to support children and young people affected by the death or terminal illness of someone important to them.

Locations across Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire that you can access our service.
Pre-Bereavement Support

We also work with children who have someone close to them who have been given a terminal diagnosis.
